Fit & Well – Exercise tips for women in their 50s
Nutrition in your fifties will determine how healthy you remain throughout the rest of your life. Eating a low-fat, low-salt diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables can reduce heart disease, cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and many other chronic diseases.

Here are a few other tips:
1. Protein is very important to energy level as well as maintaining muscle mass. Many people prefer to eat high carb, low protein foods which will contribute towards weight gain.
2. Fats are important to your skin, hair, and over all body function. Some people feel they need to go on a very low fat diet. Unless this is prescribed buy your doctor, keep in mind that there are good fats and that it is a key component in a healthy body.
3. Calcium for women over 50 is not an option. Women over fifty need calcium to prevent break down of bone. There is also evidence to suggest that women with sufficient calcium intake will gain less weight.
4. Water is so important to just about every body function. We cannot live without water and need more as we age. Kidney function will also slow down making increased water intake necessary to flush your system. Skin also becomes dryer in your fifties and water can help keep it soft and supple. Cheers!  Read more here from Performance Body Works.

Something nice to do with plastic bottles
Did you know that a great way to recycle those plastic bottles is to make an irrigation system out of them? Just put 4-8 small holes in the bottom of a 2 litre bottle. Dig a hole near the plants you want to water. Bury 1/3 - 1/2 of the bottle in the hole and then fill it up. Not only will you irrigate the plant with the water in the bottle but you will also utilise the condensation that gathers in the bottle rather than allowing it to evaporate. Even better tip - fill your bottle with rain water. Read more great tips here.

September 2008

Welcome
Spring has sprung. It is time to clear out the clutter, boost energy and warm up in anticipation for some fantastic events in the months ahead. In fact, this month’s newsletter is bursting with events, ideas and information. So much so that we had trouble fitting it all in!

One really important event coming up that I must make mention of is National Breast Cancer Day on October 27th. Every year there are 12,000 people diagnosed with this disease. It may not be you, but it may be your neighbour, daughter, sister, mother or friend. We all know someone whose life has been affected. When you stop to smell the flowers this Spring please take a moment to think about the people whose lives are affected and think about the ways that you can make a difference. You can start right now by just reading this newsletter.

Until next time, travel safely
